This is a normal post This was so far down the page few would have read it: "It's a good idea to get cyclists better educated too," he said.

This is a normal post Cyclists absolutely could do with better education in regards to safe road use.
But it's drivers that are the biggest problem. Just this morning I had some doddery old cunt pull out right in front of me on my way to work. If I had been distracted or had shitter brakes, I would have plowed straight into the side of his vehicle. I can only assume he saw me and decided that there was absolutely no way I was moving at the same speed as the car he let pass before pulling out. It's not the first time it's happened, and it definitely wont be the last.
I agree that it swings both ways though. Cyclists should be far more strictly scrutinised when using public roads, particularly at rush hour. I'd be in complete support of license scheme for cyclists, because you really do get some toppers out there.
I'm not sure it'll do much to quell the resentment some of these lazy, moon faced, fat fucks have towards two-wheelers, though.

This is a normal post There's no licensing for cyclists because:
1) Bikes are used by children, and forcing children to get a license doesn't sit well with many people.

2) Imagine a world where everyone walks. Then someone invents bicycles, and many people cycle... all is well with the world. Then someone invents automobiles, and many people get killed... THAT'S why we license cars, because they came along and caused the problem. We're only in a situation where people think it's the cyclists causing a problem because cars are so ubiquitous it doesn't occur to drivers that by moving tons of steel around at high speeds they're being dangerous dicks.

This is a normal post But they are not moving tons of steel at high speeds while parked.
I have ridden bicycles for time immemorial and motorcycles since 14: I know to always look inside cars for people, and look at their tail lights for signals.

I think the big difference is bikes going really fast and an attitude of "head down, pedal faster" when that simply isn't safe on a bike or a motorcycle.

And you miss many aural clues by blasting your Barry Manillow at 11.

This is a normal post Gah?
If you open a door and a cyclist cycles into it then you opened the door badly. Yeah, the cyclist COULD have been cycling slower.

But also the Woman didn't have to wear a top cut that low and a skirt cut that high, and then insist on walking home through a rough neighbourhood. And that guy didn't leave the house specifically intending to rape her so it must be her fault.

This is a normal post Yep, you just posted that.
You know, sometimes you're safer in life when you rely on yourself to get by. It doesn't mean that people around you won't do bad things that they should rightfully be punished for, but often a little preparation, awareness and forward thinking can provide for a safer life. I have the right to walk around downtown after midnight with wads of $100 bills hanging out of my pockets, but I'm not stupid enough to believe I won't get robbed for it.

This is a normal post Should you be licensed to walk around town though?
I know my comparison might have been a little extreme, but it gets the point across most effectively any time I suspect someone is blaming the victim.

This is a normal post I think walking you learn to avoid such things and you're also not travelling as fast.

This is a normal post When learning to drive
I was told by my instructor to leave enough room for a car door to open when passing parked cars because an occupant could open one unexpectedly.

Seems like sensible behaviour. I usually do it even if I am in a car and would not get hurt by someone doing that.

If I were likely to be the one hurt I would make sure I did it 100% of the time.

Cyclists should take sensible precautions. It is only sensible.

If a woman lies down naked in a park it is illegal to rape her. Unfortunately, in the real world, that is no protection from harm at all and her lying down naked is a bit daft. Any sensible person would not do it because they are likely to come to harm even if the harm is as a result of an illegal act. The likelihood of it happening is not eliminated by it's illegality.

The onus of care is not all on the car drivers. It is shared by the cyclists in the real world but not in the minds of some of them it seems.

Just because a car has a greater capacity for harm does not mean the cyclist has no responsibility for their own safety, that is really terrible logic.

As you say, it swings both ways. I am sure many car drivers could take more care but then so could many cyclists. If they both took more care I am sure the number of fatalities on the roads would greatly diminish.

75% of cycling accidents happen at junctions. One big thing that could change is car drivers not doing what happened to you and pulling out on cyclists, the other is cyclists not undertaking, especially near junctions.

This is a normal post Yet when I follow the Highway Code recommended distance away from parked cars (1-1.5 m)
for the very obvious reason that I can't trust some cunt not to open a door on me (which is frankly dangerous thing to have happen to you at any speed) then some cunt behind me will start shouting, parping their damned horn or even driving at me, because having the parked cars take up half the road is not enough. The fuckers want the whole of the road to themselves for driving or parking on.
