I can't think of a good response,
but I did just remember a poem about the extinct Moa, which were like a giant (12 foot tall!) version of an ostrich, were also ridiculously tame, and so were all eaten by the early European settlers.
"No Moa, no Moa, in old Aotearoa,
Can't get 'em, they've 'et 'em,
They're gone, and there ain't no Moa"
"Aotearoa" is the Mauri name for NZ, "land of the long white cloud".
