In the UK, at least, it's fine to build a replica car, but not OK to try and pass it off as the real thing. You cannot legally put a badge on it. Sure, lots of people do - and it's unlikely anyone would care unless you tried to claim it was the real thing. If you state clearly that it's a replica, you're usually OK. If you tried to sell a fake Ferrari as a real one, you'd have problems.

There's a well-known case, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars v Dodd [1981] FSR 519 when John Dodd put a huge engine into a chassis and presented it as a Rolls Royce car. It was popular at shows. RR took him to court, he lost, and had to remove the decals. Specifically, he was allowed to keep the radiator, but not the badge or the Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet ornament.

"27 Ltr Rolls Royce Merlin Engine Street Legal Car". (I do not know if it is street legal. It's possible.)

The law in other countries varies greatly.
