This is a normal post I was logging core once on an RC drill righ that was on a dyke between two cyanide lakes.
The lakes and the dyke were lined with thick black plastic sheeting. Twice I saw the offsiders (the blokes who fill up the core bags) slip on the wet plastic and almost slide into the lake. As the only company man it was probably up to me enforce OHS on the drilling contractors, but I was fresh out of uni and just thought it was part of the job. The cyanide is used for spraying on the heap leach, vast ziggurats of low-grade dirt which it slowly soaks through and recovers a small percentage of the gold as a colloid

This is a normal post Try it yourself, plenty of things contain cyanides.
I've got a cherry laurel hedge, crush/shred the leaves and they smell of benzaldehyde (cherry/sweet almond) and HCN (sharp disagreeable smell) in the background.

This is a normal post We used to use cyanide where I worked
So we had antidote kits available, which contained amyl nitrate. There was at least one occasion where a colleague claimed to have inhaled cyanide but there was more than a hint that they were just after a free hit during working hours!

This is a normal post Was it actually an antidote
Or merely something to help the poisoned enjoy their last few minutes?

This is a normal post What happens when you OD on poppers?
I've seen someone try to drink them, but whenever I've sniffed too much all I got was a blinding headache.

I've also had a (non-smoking) friend ask for a cigarette, dip it in the bottle and stick it up his nose.

Takes all sorts, I suppose.
