Inspired by the video below
So you bought some fancy Mach 2 fighters to defend against the Soviets, but your engineers rather liked the look of those Harriers they saw at the airshow last summer...

Span hoe airfield from where the 82nd air born loaded up for D Day
Just outside Corby used to have one these standing just inside the main gate.
It had the Luftwaffe markings on it, but had the engine removed and most of the cockpit instrumentation. It is a very small plane that still looks like it's doing 500 mph even with no engine.

That looks terrifying
I'm guessing JATO stands for Jet Arse Take Off.

Messerschmitt Me 321 was fitted with rockets
To help with getting air born originally designed as a heavy lift glider. Could carry over 100 fully equipped soldiers or over 20 tons of cargo.
Later models had 6 engines fitted to allow power flights. This was so big that Heinkel had to modify the He111 bomber by removing the right wing gear of one plane and the left wing of the second plane. They were rejoined by a special wing and needed 2 pilots to fly it. Just to get the glider of the ground then used jettisonable rocket packs on a frame made of steel tubing with wooden spars and covered in doped fabric

The JATO Impala
was one of the first big time internet urban legends, but it's been around longer than that.

I was living on an AFB in Germany when these were in service - every week it seems one went down... they used to call them "Widowmakers"

They also got the nickname "Lawn Darts", which amuses me no end.
