THey used to include it in army medic kits
The vibe was that if you got wounded, two mates would bang you up with it, grab one side of your webbing each and drag you back to cover at top speed. Morphine was nearly strong enough. We were told that ket would effectively disconnect your head from your body. No point in using it if your head was actually disconnected from your body.

I had a friend who used to inject it into his bottom
Intramuscular rather than IV, but even that wasn't a pretty sight: both during and after.

It works, but is not fun
Had to be transported to the hospital after a back injury. Morphine wouldn't touch it, dilaudid wouldn't either and I felt ever crack in the road. At the ER, they hit me with ketamine and it broke the pain, but it was very unpleasant.
The fun with a high is that you have a reference to reality that lets you know just how far away from reality your high has taken you. With ketamine, there is no touch with reality, just petrifying, floating consciousness.
