'We are aloof fucking dicks who think they are better than you and wouldn't raise a finger to help you imbecilic mammals or piss on you if you were on fire, we're only doing this one small thing for Gandalf because he asked us nicely.'

This is a normal post bored, I recently watched some 40 minute video analysing whether the Tom Bombadil character was a maia, a valar, or even the god/illuvater manifestation
the one theory they didn't examine was that tolkien had written some frankly pretty average poetry and wanted to shoehorn it into his book. people forget sometimes it's a fantasy invention about talking trees and magic rings, rather than some perfectly coherent history of real events.

This is a normal post Amateurs!
The character is based on a little toy figure from the Netherlands that one of his kids had. And he said in one of his letters that Tom is there to represent the spirit of the vanishing countryside.

You can find the published collection of JRRT's letters free online, easily enough. He was forever changing his mind about stuff, and writing new versions. Not like George Lucas though - once he'd published, he only ever made one change - to make The Hobbit line up with the plot of his sequel. No, he just grumbled about free will and Catholicism, and whether orcs had souls.
