I haven't watched this yet, but it always amazes me how
a couple of palm trees and some smoke can turn East Anglia into the Vietnamese countryside

That was great thanks.
It occurs to me that I can't think of another filmmaker whose films aren't diminished no matter how much is revealed about their making.

Agreed. His obsession with the highest available technology (at the time) to facilitate his craftmanship is another level. The more you learn, the greater the films become IMO.
I wonder what modern technological revolutions he'd adopt or be pioneering if he were still alive (and a bit younger). Would he have converted to digital or still be shooting on film? The cameras he used were comparatively old at the time, so I wonder. How much would he have embraced CGI? Or would he have argued it simply wasn't good enough for his needs?
I mean he lived to see Jurassic Park... *googles what he thought of it*

Good questions, none of which I'd dare speculate about.
I've read every book on 2OO1 and still don't catch myself "knowing" how they did each shot whenever I watch it (except maybe the astronauts in space bit, but it's still fucking dramatic).
If he ever did get into CGI I know I wouldn't want to be the person responsible for doing the VFX :)
