Just found out that Stobe the Hobo has died - RIP
The death of this brilliant and one-of-a-kind Youtuber has hit harder than any celeb (except maybe Bowie).
The guy was inspirational. For those that don't know, he was a rail-rider in the USA who took very cool footage of his journeys across America, underscored by his piano compositions. He had a dry, sarcastic sense of humour and many observational gems, and loved a beer.
I urge you to check out some of his videos - they are calming and small pieces of art.

Someone said that you should only ride the rails if your life doesn't mean much to you.
There was always a great sense of loneliness in his videos. Crisscrossing the country, staying on sofas, sleeping rough, the compulsion to find the nearest beer shop.
Train hopping looks like it would be fun for a few hours - a day and a night at most. To do it for weeks on end, the constant clanging of crashing metal, the cold and exposure, discomfort, danger, risk of arrest...well...this train is bound for glory, and all that.

I really dug his videos
They took me somewhere i'd never been before, and you hit the nail on the head with the melancholy feeling of loneliness.
In some of them, he even questions why he is doing what he does, and has no good answer, other than the sense of freedom and adventure.
He had talent, as his piano playing attested, and was clearly a clever dude, but something compelled him to be a drifter. Respect for sticking to his guns until the end.

and Lennon said he had "not intended to kill anybody". John Lennon was actually killed by somebody called Mark which is almost the same name as Marek. Pretty ironic.

Thought that with the Tom Hardy example, he went to Yemen? The best thing we could all do to help Yemen is to put pressure on our Government to put pressure on SA. Ok it isn't a black&white situation but more could be done...but getting Tom Hardy with a placard outside Westminster asking all his fans to write to their MP doesn't bring in the cash I guess.

With Yemen a lot can be achieved by the world stopping selling arms to either side and getting SA and Iran to talk rather than fight their proxy wars.
But that's not going to happen any time soon and the likely hood of all out war is getting much greater.
As for governmental pressure from SA, from what i've heard with interviews of diplomats is public pressure is counter productive.
I would hope there is some pressure in private but being private I have no assurances there.

It's a free country.
But in specifically the situation in Yemen it's not going to help unless Mohammad bin Salman is a big fan of his.
Where it would help is if there was a situation where the public giving a shit mattered. Iran and SA are not going to stop their fighting because some westerners are concerned about it and the cold hard fact is the UK government have only a few leavers to pull and they must be pulled in private in order to have a positive effect.

"any intractable problem on another continent"
Ah I see, you just object to supporting overseas charities then?
Sure you wouldn't decline the help from the likes of Shelter, Cancer Research, RNIB etc if you found yourself in a position to need it.

works just as well with domestic charities
Shall we vote for people who promise to raise taxes in order to combat homelessness / research cancer cures / help disabled people or shall we pop 50p in James Corden's rattling tin for an instant warm glow?

So make the NGO's GO's?
Make charity workers currently working for free or reduced pay state employees? Currently thats 853,000 people.
That's going to be very expensive to do isn't it?
Also it's going to make them political. MSF is already a target when doing their work. Is making them an arm of the state going to help that?
If it were me I would continue to fund these causes via massive tax relief and government funding.
Anyway, whatever makes you feel good when sneering at others helping others.

Well I said "Make charity workers currently working for free or reduced pay state employees?"
Thought the number was large enough to point out it couldn't be nationalised without muddling things with workers that work for free a few times a year or month.

If Ed Sheeran really wanted to do good, he could put some of his own money towards the problem...
How much did he donate anyway?
EDIT : It seems he donated a couple of bags of clothes to a charity shop last year. I am sure they would have preferred a million pounds.

Give him a break, the idiot means well. How much did the chief executive of Medecibs Sans Frontières earn last year?
And how many people drowned trying to get to their rescue ship in the Mediterranean this year?

MSF UK's chief earned 79k. It's clearly stated on their website.
Bearing in mind that:
a) they had no navigational aids in the dinghies so didn't know exactly where they were; and
b) they had no way to know where the rescue ships were; and
c) they paid to be transported to Europe(not to a ship)
how do you come to the conclusion that people were actively trying to get to those ships*? or that the presence of rescue ships in any way encouraged people to attempt to flee from their homes?
*or should I say, the one MSF ship in the entire Med.

Nothing irresponsible about lurking just over the boundary into international waters.
Nothing irresponsible about actively engaging with people traffickers and arranging pick ups.
Not stoking the demand for people traffickers and encouraging people to risk their lives, and no one ever dies.
Give that man a pay rise.

Does the existence of, say, ambulances, encourage people to do stupid shit and hurt themselves?
Ooh maybe we should ban seatbelts because they encourage people to drive dangerously?
( , Mon 4 Dec 2017, 13:15, Share, Reply)
Ambulances don't seem to encourage people across motorways, no. However the existence of rescue boats mooching about in the Med must, at the very, very least, provide hope to those planning on making the crossing that if it all goes wrong salvation is not out if the question. Sadly, in reality it was out of the question for over a thousand this year alone.

How DARE we give hope to people fleeing war zones
Have you really, honestly, ever spent 10 minutes listening to an actual refugee and asked them about why they left?
Or is it just easier to complain about humanitarian efforts and just let the fuckers drown because it's their own fault?

Just some numbers for the debate.
data2.unhcr.org/en/situations/mediterranean
So 14.1% actually fleeing a warzone.
The rest looking for a better life economically or socially.
Can't blame anyone for wanting that but not a war zone.
Just also point out that they're using this dangerous route because the EU made a deal with Turkey to block a safer land crossing.
On those leaving warzones.
Russia has been accused (By NATO) of weaponising migration in order to destabilise Europe. Supposed reason for the targeting of civilians with barrel bombs and chemical weapons. Has no strategic value but gets them leaving the country.

so desperate hungry familes who have possibly endured weeks and months
of dangerous uncertain travel facilitated by traffickers who have most likely taken most of their life savings are going to stand on the beach (assuming it's daytime) look out at the Med and say: "nah fuck it - there's no other boats around, I'm sure the nice traffickers will give us our money back, maybe we'll go tomorrow".

Not his biggest fan but he paid in time presumably for free.
How much would it cost to hire someone like him to make a film like this?
And some people need a famous face on the telly in order to give a shit.
[edit]
A quick google search shows he supports a number of charities publicly and has done promo viddies to support them.
Only his accountant will know how much cash he's given them but a celebs time to promote something has a value and can have more so than a cash donation used in a tax write off.

In the article it is more about the charities themselves than the celebs they get on board. I guess the point is they could just reach out to their fan base and speak out on issues...rather than you know helicopter in to play their latest single next to a starving person.

Well..
you must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres.
Although pre 1 September number plates were a little larger and should be read from a distance of 20.5 metres.
The joke is the silver car (assuming the car park designer followed the regs for a 90 degree square parking (5.5m bay length + 6.0m lane widths) layout) was clearly 23 metres away! So the chap was unfairly failed.

It seems he finally found wherever it was he was trying to get to, that being to fall off of, or get hit by, a train in Maryland.
I have been checking out the history of my family, we do not move about much. I think my great grandfather was the wandering traveller, he moved all the way from Stafford to Wakefield, that is over 60 miles!
After that we were a bit tired so nobody moved further than 10 miles for about 120 years....
