contrary to the whole steamwilf thing I'd actually be more interested in spaceships and aliens and robots and such.
although if they ran on steam it'd be kinda cool

I think I just like the idea of technology I could actually fix or build, where as the higher realm of electrickry are beyond me. well, once you get up to robot-level, anyway.

steampunk is basically the Victorians' idea of what the future would be, based on their own technological knowledge.
We already think the 1950s sci-fi ideas are hideously outdated. Just imagine what our predictions of the future are going to look like in a hundred years.

It was, in its early days, a way of tackling current issues, by having an alternative timeline. The whole steam powered space ships and stuff, was because the early writers were well in to Jules Verne and his ilk.
