To be fair, journalists have always been shit and lazy.
They just have different resources to use now.

Saw a great headline recently saying something like "KIDS AS YOUNG AS 9 TAKING EXTACY, SAYS LOCAL MP"
Turns out someone in his consituency had told him that they'd HEARD that a 9 year old had taken extacy once.
