Letter of notice
Right then guys,

I'm currently handing in my notice in work and am wondering about the best way to do it.

I want to write a letter and I want to keep it on good terms for the company (not because I want to work here again but because I'm just an all-round nice guy! :)).

Can anyone give me any tips? Like on how to start, what to write and all that?

Cheers!

Google is your friend
but every letter of notice I have sent has:

* been dated on the day I handed it in
* been to the point (i.e. "I hereby give [your notice period] weeks/months notice of my resignation
* had a brief explanation (i.e. "I'm leaving to pursue another great opportunity" ... but you don't need to say where)
* included a final closing thank you (i.e. I wish the firm and my colleagues all the best for the future)

erm... that's about it

HR won't give a monkey's if it's a big firm, if it's a small place they might appreciate a wordier thank you.

Probably best to have a quick google - there are loads of examples to choose from. Short, polite and to the point.

UP YOURS, CUNT
and then run off giggling and crying.

I may have actually done this once.

Indeed!

On another note, how do people feel about references? My mate (who happens to be on a lot more money than me) claims that references mean shit all. I thought they'd be rather important...

References...
Depends who they are. If they are respected pillars of the community then they carry a lot of weight. Uncles and aunts, less so.

I
think that references are also used as a swing sort of vote, if they like you but are unsure of you...
