This is a question Advice from Old People

Sometimes, just sometimes, old people say something worth listening to. Ok, so it's like picking the needle out of a whole haystack of mis-remembered war stories, but those gems should be celebrated.

Tell us something worthwhile an old-type person has told you.

Note, we're leaving the definition of old up to you, you smooth-skinned youngsters.

« Go Back

Apologies for the length
but I couldn't agree more with the advice bestowed by Scroobius Pip in 'Thou shalt always kill'. Its pretty much my song of the decade.

Thou shalt not steal if there is direct victim.
Thou shalt not worship pop idols or follow lost prophets.
Thou shalt not take the names of Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer, Johnny Hartman, Desmond Decker, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix or Syd Barret in vain.
Thou shalt not think that any male over the age of 30 that plays with a child that is not their own is a paedophile… Some people are just nice.
Thou shalt not read NME.
Thall shalt not stop liking a band just because they’ve become popular.
Thou shalt not question Stephen Fry.
Thou shalt not judge a book by it’s cover.
Thou shalt not judge Lethal Weapon by Danny Glover.
Thall shalt not buy Coca-Cola products. Thou shalt not buy Nestle products.
Thou shalt not go into the woods with your boyfriend’s best friend, take drugs and cheat on him.
Thou shalt not fall in love so easily.
Thou shalt not use poetry, art or music to get into girls’ pants. Use it to get into their heads.
Thou shalt not watch Hollyoaks.
Thou shalt not attend an open mic and leave as soon as you’re done just because you’ve finished your sh*tty little poem or song you self-righteous pr*ck.
Thou shalt not return to the same club or bar week in, week out just ’cause you once saw a girl there that you fancied but you’re never gonna f*cking talk to.

Thou shalt not put musicians and recording artists on ridiculous pedestals no matter how great they are or were.

The Beatles - Were just a band.
Led Zepplin - Just a band.
The Beach Boys - Just a band.
The Sex Pistols - Just a band.
The Clash - Just a band.
Crass - Just a band.
Minor Threat - Just a band.
The Cure - Just a band.
The Smiths - Just a band.
Nirvana - Just a band.
The Pixies - Just a band.
Oasis - Just a band.
Radiohead - Just a band.
Bloc Party - Just a band.
The Arctic Monkeys - Just a band.
The next big thing - JUST A BAND.

Thou shalt give equal worth to tragedies that occur in non-English speaking countries as to those that occur in English speaking countries.
Thou shalt remember that guns, bitches and bling were never part of the four elements and never will be.

Thou shalt not make repetitive generic music

Thou shalt not make repetitive generic music

Thou shalt not make repetitive generic music

Thou shalt not make repetitive generic music

Thou shalt not pimp my ride.
Thou shalt not scream if you wanna go faster.
Thou shalt not move to the sound of the wickedness.
Thou shalt not make some noise for Detroit.
When I say “Hey” thou shalt not say “Ho”.
When I say “Hip” thou shalt not say “Hop”.
When I say “he say, she say, we say, make some noise” - kill me.
Thou shalt not quote me happy.
Thou shalt not shake it like a polaroid picture.
Thou shalt not wish your girlfriend was a freak like me.
Thou shalt spell the word “Pheonix” P-H-E-O-N-I-X not P-H-O-E-N-I-X, regardless of what the Oxford English Dictionary tells you.
Thou shalt not express your shock at the fact that Sharon got off with Bradley at the club last night by saying “Is it”.
Thou shalt think for yourselves.

*Beats with stick*

He's not the cleverest person in the world or the funniest but he is both and in spades *sulks*

@Enzyme
I'm confused (easily done) are you saying that you don't like Stephen Fry, or that you do as you wouldn't question him?
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:21, closed)
I agree with most of this but:
1)Coke tastes good
b)Kit-kats are awesome (as are many other Nestlé products)
9)Why would I spell it Pheonix; that is just wrong?

edit: @bazmorningstar (below): The Floyd aren't just a band, they are a way of life. admittedly that way of life involves a lot of acid, and probably isn't great for your mental health, but it is a way of life nonetheless!
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:24, closed)
Stephen Fry
I don't have anything against him at all. But the quotation makes me laugh, and if your model of cleverness is based on him, it's... well... y'know... a bit...

Let's face it: he's not exactly Carl Sagan, is he?

EDIT: Off now. See y'all tomorrow...
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:24, closed)
Carl Sagan?
Didn't he make Power Rangers?

Edit - No, that was the company Haim Saban

Noticed an omission... or did I?

Nirvana were alright but nothing special
If Krist Novoselic was the lead singer, they wouldnt have been half as famous.

@Enzyme - Yer man Sagan is clever but your average Joe Bloggs hasnt a clue who he is. Fry makes being clever quite cool and has probably inadvertently saved a few million geeks an arsekicking.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:31, closed)
listened to Nirvana recently?
I don't think they've aged well.

unlike
The Beatles
Led Zepplin
The Beach Boys
The Clash
The Cure
The Pixies

(I'd include the Sex pistols in that list, but I just plain don't like them, or that sort of punk. no merit to it in my view)
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:33, closed)
I reckon
its too early to see if Nirvana have aged well.

To be honest its pretty irrelevant to me as nothing will ever beat the way they sounded to me as a moody little 14 year old.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:37, closed)
Agree
Wholeheartedly with Vipros but I'd throw Radiohead in as well!

And let me apologise for regularly doing the:

Sorry

The Clash
I have never understood the reverence which is given to The Clash.

They were okay, but London Calling is a really sprawling album with not that many worthwhile songs on it.

I just really do not get why people think they are so great. Joe Strummer was so constantly furious with everything that you can't understand a word he's saying.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:38, closed)
I can understand
you saying that nothing will sound as good as they did to a moody 14 year old.

I'm a really bad music snob though, for which I apologise unreservedly.

Fortunately, not only do I love Pink Floyd, but they have a strong sentimental connection for too.

I still can't understand why it's telling you to spell a word wrong though. reckon we should tell the Phoenicians to change their spelling too?
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:43, closed)
He may be constantly furious
But to me it comes across as passionate and completely not up his own arse unlike some *cough*liam gallagher*cough*.

I lol'd at the very end of Capitol Radio 1 when Joe completely loses the plot.

London Calling is also my favourite album ever. So many styles are covered with such verve and passion. Each song unique and some truely awesome lyrics.

Nothing wrong with being a music snob!

Just remembered I've been to Pink Floyd's floating studio on the Thames. My dad used to know the caretaker. Wished I'd properly understood where I was when I visited it as a kid.

but paul weller is a penis, and their music is boring. admittedly better than most of the shit you get these days, but still...

how did the sex pistols change the world?

other than by making a load of people stop listening to popular music at the time

I could of course be wrong.

@Al
but if it were a dig at that sort of thing then it'd be the only line in the song that was telling you to do something, but not really meaning it

which is terribly confusing
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:53, closed)
We might disagree about the Clash and Pistols
but they were both eons ahead of much of todays music. Vipros is right, there is SO much fucking shit music about at the moment. I honestly can't think of a really good band at the moment.

I mean what the hell is going on with bands like the Ting Tings. Crap. What an absolute load of bum wee.

Think my music snob side is coming out.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:55, closed)
I like the Raconteurs
because they are a bit weird

best band around at the moment are an aussie band called The John Butler Trio. check out the video for their song Funky Tonight on youtube.

they don't have much of a message, but my god they can play. happy music :-)

can't think of anyone else at the moment. edit: apart from Monster Magnet, but they aren't exactly that new. they do rule though.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:57, closed)
@weeker
It's mainly the Clash's fault that punk is associated with socialism anyway.

Punk = being a punk (as in a scumbag) and not giving a shit. Not 'being a right-on student opposed to money and profit'. People like Legs McNeil of Punk magazine and Johnny Ramone ie the originators of 'punk' in the 70s* were/are quite right wing.

Listen to the Pistols on the Bill Grundy show - quite openly revelling in the money they got and that they'd 'fucking spent it. Down the boozer'. Not given it to charity.

*your ACTUAL originators of punk like Iggy Pop and the 60s garage bands are probably even more openly welcoming of money etc than the 70s lot. By definition if you're a 'punk' you're a bit of an arsehole.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 15:58, closed)
I quite like

I agree. The Raconteurs have a certain 'edge' to them.

Great bands working today
1 - literally and figuratively, The Mars Volta

2 - Tool (metal but still gorgeous)

3 - Opeth (very very metal but insanely melodic with far more music per square inch)

4 - dEUS (Most under-rated band ever)

5 - Built To Spill (Yankee stoner rock)

6 - Cherry Ghost (manc twangers - gorgeous)

7 - Elbow (awful live but great studio sound)

8 - The Redneck Manifesto (instrumental band probably not heard of outside Ireland - CHECK EM OUT!)

9 - Sub-Plots (formerly envelope). Again, Irish, Mogwai influenced, a little angsty at times but beautifully rhythmic and they rock)

10 - Interpol - dont hate them because they're on MTV and have silly haircuts. They are really good.

couldn't really get in to 65 days of static
because I'm feeling expansive today I will furnish you with my list of top bands (no idea how many it will be) I invite you to do the same.

these aren't in any order of merit, just order I think of them, and are purely based on how awesome I think they are.

Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
Monster Magnet
Johnny Cash
Tool
John Butler Trio
The Doors

I can't think of any more immediately, so this will do

I welcome comments

@ Monty
Yes fair point about the pistols but equally I was getting at they are hardly the face of "punk" and although I'm a big fan of their album, they were dining out on 'Never Mind The Bollocks' until the 90s at least. Contradictory in many ways not that I'm too big an expert on the subject.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 16:10, closed)
Monster Magnet are great
and I sing their praises at every opportunity, to the point that all my mates won't listen to them, even though they like them...

annoying really.

their latest album is great.

@baz
I would like to add;

Clutch - the finest band I've ever seen live. Great slabs of blues rock with some of the best lyrics ever.

ISIS - huge sound, epic "post-rock".

Pelican - completely instrumental soundscapes.

Sons and Daughters - Glaswegian indie kids. Bit folky, punky attitude. Great live.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 16:16, closed)
@al
I second the Dresden Dolls.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 16:16, closed)
@weeker
I reckon if you asked 99% of people to name a punk band they'd say the Pistols - to the world at large they are very much the face of punk. And seeing as they split up before recording much else they've not had much else to dine out on since, eh?

I'm enormously biased though - my grandfather was the English professor whose testimony made it possible for them to call that LP 'Bollocks'. We had a copy signed by the band thanking him - until my fucking gran gave it to Oxfam in the 80s

I'd also like to submit for your pleasure
Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation

I got the album when it came out because I love Zeppelin. it took a while but it is a work of genius.

I saw him and them in Bristol last year, cost me £15 and I know that I will never see as good a gig as that again.

I was literally speechless afterwards it was so good.

Mrs Vipros and I just walked slowly to the car without talking and drove most of the way home in silence still soaking it up.

The Dead Kennedys - kick arse punk rock with rhythm AND a brain

Sub Hum Ans - stupid socialists but man can they play!

Fugazi - fond of arpeggios

someone was talking about them yesterday too

Re: Signed Pistols LP. can you imagine the face of the person who found that in Oxfam?
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 16:25, closed)
@baz
I keep meaning to check Sigur Ros out and never get round to it.
Haven't heard the new Opeth yet either but heard it's pretty ace.

For Clutch I recommend Blast Tyrant, Robot Hive/Exodus and From Beale Street to Obliteration. With a bit of luck I'll be off to see them in August for the 3rd time.

For Pelican try Australasia, The Fire in our Throts Will Bring on the Thaw or City of Echoes.

Of course I agree with you - The Pistols are the first name people think of when punk is mentioned - but I say, not only is the Pistols work inferior to the Clash's, there are a lot of mixed messages when you take a look at their punk ethic.

Not that I'm really complaining as punk is dead

I saw Nick Cave
after the And No More Shall We Part album came out, when I was at the height of my obsession, since then I haven't listened to him as much, in fact I haven't heard the new album at all. Is it any good?

@BK, Vipros
thanks for the updates on music today.

RE: Sigur Ros - it may take a wee minute to get over the falsetto and it takes an age for anything to happen. Take your time and dont expect instant gratification.

Bigtime Pink Floyd fan here
and have been for about 30 years. I still listen to them, and have yet to get tired of the music.

That said, I don't admire Syd Barrett anywhere near as much as I admire David Gilmour- there's no doubt as to who's the better guitarist. But more than that- Gilmour has been a very large philanthropist in a very quiet way ever since they started really getting rich, and has proven to be generally a really decent human being. It wasn't until after Syd died that it came to light that Gilmour had been financially taking care of him for all those years. So he's the one exception I would make to putting a musician on a pedestal.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 16:40, closed)
@TRL
you know, every time I find something new out about you I like you more.

David Gilmour is my hero in guitarist terms, he's why I've got my Strat, and he does genuinely seem like a nice guy.

unlike Roger Waters, who was/is a arrogant knob.

Barrett was a visionary, and without him the world wouldn't have Pink Floyd, which on its own is something to be grateful for

Best Tracks are:

Sex Changes
Backstabber
Delilah
Girl Anachronism
Half Jack
Jeep Song

But both albums are brill. Second album is abit better, and they recently released a collection of B-Sides which has some good tracks on it.

Also, I like Jason Mraz. Live he's really funny. And Ben Harper. Live he's incredible.

I was watching PF
playing 'Astronomy Domine' and 'Interstellar Overdrive' last night on some ancient pop show in b&w - utterly, utterly timeless. Hans Keller is the host and he slates them - have you seen it?

Okay...so it's all music stuff...
I'll leave now as I know bugger all about music.

And now I'm playing it in my head...of course that's a blokes voice...but a high pitched one.

I think it's because I like to wail along to songs...so obviously it's easier for me to wail to a female...or a chap in tight trousers - but that doesn't include Mick Jagger.

Thanks, Vipros!
I agree regarding Waters- the man himself I find to be unpleasant, and I dislike his solo work. Sadly, he and Gilmour were much better writing together than either of them can do alone- the chemistry between them was great, but now seems to be forever lost.

I do still like Gilmour's solo work, though. And the stuff he's done with Rick Wright is fantastic! I was utterly thrilled to see the two of them tour together. They both still utterly rock!
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 17:02, closed)
If you like Sigur Ros
You may well like Godspeed! You Black Emporer.

The Slow Riot ro New Zero Kanada EP is brilliant, and you may recognise it as the music off the opening scenes of 28 days later (yes I know, another zombie film).

Their albums get increasingly worse, or at least, not really progressing musically and therefore a bit dull, bu F#A#infinity is an ace album.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 17:03, closed)
generally I'd agree that the writing chemistry was better when they were together
but I'd say that momentary lapse of reason and division bell do have some of floyd's best songs on them.

At the moment
1. Rilo Kiley - twangy, bouncy American indie rock. I've seen them live twice and would give up men for the lead singer. She lovely.

2. Tarja - I can't stand Nightwish, mainly because Stalker Girl sang her appalling renditions of their songs over and over at me in Switzerland (if you're reading this love, you're not a soprano, you sound like cats mating, and you're very lucky I didn't key your car the other day), but her solo stuff makes me go all tingly. (Mr Maladicta goes tingly for other reasons.)

3. John Denver - I grew up on his music thanks to hippyish parents and it's just part of the furniture now.

4. AC/DC - I've only really got into them recently but I love them muchly.

I'm told if you like the Cocteau Twins you should try early Hooverphonic - apparently Cocteau were a big influence.

Conversely I haven't actually got round to listening to the Cocteau Twins myself - can you recommend any of their best stuff?

EDIT: @al & vipros - AC/DC. I quite like 'em myself. But would you not admit that you only really need to hear one album to summarise their career?
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 17:28, closed)
My tastes in music
often frighten people.

Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
PJ Harvey
Patsy Cline
King Crimson
Jay Ungar and Molly Mason
Old School Freight Train
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Tom Waits
Kate Bush
The Pietasters
Heart
The Cogburns
Dervish
Tom Lehrer
Pearl Jam (their first two albums, anyway)
The Datsuns
Melissa Etheridge (first two albums- didn't care for what came after that)
Scott Joplin
Ute Lemper (I'd marry her if I could)
Amy Macdonald

...and so on. It's all over the spectrum, and putting my WMP on shuffle will give anyone cultural whiplash.
(, Tue 24 Jun 2008, 17:32, closed)
@Supreme Crow
well, yes and no. If you want to be mean, then yes they are a hard blues rock band and as such much of their music can sound quite similar, but if you like them, then this isn't a bad thing. And the different albums do offer different things.

@al
Ok, the tunes are all different, but there is a "formula" of sorts to a lot (not all) of AC/DC. I listen to a lot of blues-rock myself, and I know a lot of it becomes very formulaic, (have you heard the Best of Elmore James?) though there are some artists who can miraculously pull it off without repeating themselves too much. They are few and far between though.

Do remember though that they didn't really make videos...it's all about the sound and in my opinion it hasn't aged at all - sounds as fresh and new now as it did then when it came out.

If you decide you like them, torrent their whole discography

I like those - particularly Pandora. Ta kindly, I may have to start torrenting when I get home.

Thee Hypnotics
...were fucking brilliant. No-one cared at the time - no-one does now.

For a young chap in the mid-80s it was the closest you could get to seeing the Stooges or the MC5 - until the Stooges reformed: I saw the Funhouse gig at Hammersmith and was blown away.

AC/DC and Motorhead are both incredible live. Looking forward to checking out Airbourne too.

That said, Gong blew me away last week too, on a different tip.

Best I ever saw was Hawkwind at various free festivals in the 80s - however I was somewhat *enhanced* each time so perhaps my neurotransmitters may have been filling in a few gaps...
