It was around a lot then
They must have thought music with no music, beat, tempo, or other characteristics of music was `edgy`

Flippant comment above aside,
although I was already somewhat familiar with his more well-know works, a book of his works I discovered in a second-hand book shop in my early teens had a profound effect on me.
I really liked the background music too (love the early drum machine sound).
