Frontier: First Encounters (Elite 3) - rewritten for D3D / Open GL
Hadn't thought to post this as I'm pretty sure most of it's been around for a while. But what with the current theme over on /board, there's some Elite enthusiasm over there and there doesn't seem to have been much posted historically on here. So its time for some related linkage
The vid shows a reprogrammed executable for Frontier: First Encounters some very clever ruskies are working on. Looks mighty impressive.
Screenies and links to downloads are at this site:
www.frontierastro.co.uk/Hires/hiresffe.html#ffed3d
As this site probably explains FFE, Frontier and Elite are now shareware and you can download the original files from www.eliteclub.co.uk/
You will need them to play, you just stick the replacement executable in the same directory as the original files and off you go. Or you can screw around with DosBox and EMS / XMS settings and play in original low res glory!
It's pretty early days for the D3D one so you may also like to check out the more complete JJFFE and GLFFE which are both openGL compatible versions of FFE. People who prefer Frontier may want to check out GLFrontier too. All should be linked from that website (all require the original game files)
While I'm here also check out Elite the Musical!!
www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/musical/book.htm
The links to the odd MP3s still seem to be on there (hidden in the script) but I can't check they work from here. "I am Elite" is classic I seem to remember and well worth a listen.
