It's quite simple, Nick Clegg wants rid of Trident,

our nuclear weapons defence. So our future could look like this, (if it was still during the cold war and set in a shit 1980's movie.)

But umm...

Isn't the film essentially about someone taking control of nuclear weapons and using them against us? Trident isn't a nuclear weapon's defence, it's just more nuclear weapons.

Which are arguably not under our control but rather the U.S.'s

Hence why a few military spokesman called for its funding to be put elsewhere (I think).

If you are American then yes...

The film is about an American Kid launching US nukes towards russia and hence the russians respond by launching theirs. So no, not really launching nukes at themselves but starting a war.

And yes. Trident is not really a nuclear defence, it's a nulcear deterent. Same thing really.
