Blood pours from the canine's mouth onto the head and body of his prey, who is rendered as owl-like but with human facial characteristics ... it seems likely that the chimera is based on pictures of bats Bacon kept in his private collection of images.
There you are, you see, it all ties together. Not sure how the bacon fits with the bats, but we're getting closer.
