I then cut them back into three images (for file size) and it is this final process that takes about half hour.

why does posting six 40k files seem better than posting two 120k files? it's the same bandwidth being soaked up (a bit more, most likely, since each single file will have its own header). the point of the file size guidelines is to try and reduce the total size of the board, not so that everyone makes 500k pictures and slices them in five, which is a pretty pointless endeavour.

What's the point chopping the pictures up? You're not saving anyone any bandwidth, and that's the only justification for filesize limits in the first place. One way or the other, you're still putting in the region of 500k onto the board in a single post. I'm not being a filesize Nazi - some people justifiably are, since they're on limited broadband or (insanely) browsing b3ta from their phone, but my home broadband is unlimited and work don't block b3ta, so I'm pretty relaxed. It's just... chopping the pictures up makes it look like you're trying to hide how big the posts are.
