# Rental cars are
way too expensive. Go grayhound. It's not like you're traveling cross country, just around the Northern Illinois area. Grayhound may be a bit slower than driving, but it's very inexpensive and you see the countryside while you're at it. And the fares are pretty cheap depending on where you start to were you go. I'd say no more than $100 us dollars for you Tom. *edit- I believe you would also need a license and most companys won't rent unless you are 25 years old or over and have insurance. **edit again - you will also need a credit card or they will charge you out the arse to rent a car, whereas with grayhound, cash is fine.

# I like companies

# oh yeah and
greyhound sucks sometimes (esp in summer) because you're stuck on a bus for like 8 hours, always next to the sweaty fat person or the old lady that's going to hack up a lung and probably give you SARS before the trip is over

# I've travelled cross country on Greyhound bus
and it was torturous (and I was 19 and up for an adventure). I also took the train round trip Illinois/California - torturous and expensive. If you have a long distance to go, flying is the way to go. If you don't mind the stink of chemical toilets and fat folks sitting on your arm, go Greyhound and stay at youth hostels.
