Im just getting used to Imageready, and now the bugger comes up with 'Assertion failed' when I try to save?
Ive tried the interweb but it's not being forthcoming with answers. Any help anyone?

is that when you save it as a psd, or when you try to save for web as a gif?
not wishing to be sarky, but perhaps your version's not as complete as it could be, and is missing part of it's saving routines?

Whatever settings I have, as soon as I try to save, save optimised or export I just get "Could not complete action, Assertion failed"

try jumping to photoshop and save it as PSD from there - it should retain the animation information...
