I seem to remember directing somebody who asked this before
to a program I hadn't tried that might work. I'll search for that. Unless in fact it was you and it didn't work.

Theres a little app called Graphedit that i use occasionally
It can be used to render all manner of media files and does so using a graph-like layout to show what codecs are used. Good thing is you can then edit the codecs and reprocess the file into some other format - i tend to use it to convert .avi files with an mp3 sound track into ones with a PCM soundtrack for better compatibility...
I know it can render .vob files, so it should do the trick for converting to .avi format - just needs a bit of practice...
