I'm about to lose my connection to b3ta for asking but...

Where are you from originally and do you consider Taiwan to be China?

New Zealand originally,

and definitely don't think Taiwan's part of China. No massive political motivation for the belief, but having been to both, I really do think Taiwan is markedly different to the mainland. That, and I believe that any place's people should have the right to determine their own fate, and the majority here aren't in favor of being brought into the Communist fold.

Yeah, I know that, most of the world recognises it

It's just China that refuses to see it. I'm in South China myself at the min and it's actually written into my contract not to mention this kind of stuff.

I'm not renewing my contract, put it that way.

Edit: Did you guys notice China sneaking that policy through that would mean it's literally an act of war for Taiwan to declare itself independant? Scary stuff given that it looks like it's going to be approved :s

Actually the law's already been passed.

I was part of the protest myself. Hell of a thing, that protest, and that law is scary as fuck. Definitely making sure I've got fundage to get the hell out of here when the bombs start dropping.

And consequently am wary of sticking my nose into other country's political affairs. I can only say that most of my Taiwanese colleagues would be aghast at the suggestion of being part of China. Although many of them consider themselves Chinese...

Yeah,

but the thing that causes the confusion is that Chinese can be both a nationality AND an ethnicity. Most of the people I know here would call themselves ethnic Chinese of Taiwanese nationality.

My students are really confused about it, though most of them (elementary school age) very definitely consider themselves Taiwanese, which probably tells you something about the future of the country. So you here long term then?

pretty much. Considering at least another couple of years, partly 'cause I like it here, partly 'cause it's a good business decision. (Working as a Chinese-to-English translator, more business working from here.)
