here's a helpful tip
large pictures that are more like photos are better if saved as a jpeg. Gif format is used either for animated pictures or for pictures with large areas of the same color

it depends on the program you use to make the images
If you're using just MSpaint, you don't have much of a choice. But most other programs have an option to change how much the image is compressed. If you turn it down to 20-25% compression, that will balance out the size but still keep sharp lines sharp

Under tattyshop,
you choose Image Quality, not compression. So pretty much always use "12: Best" with Tattyshop and JPEGs. Unless you're really trying to minimise filesize.
