Also:
I was thinking of ideas for award gifs today.
One thing that kept making me laugh was acronyms... like the Competent Unified Network Text award. That's probably too blatant and I think we'd get caught out, but you see where I'm going with this. Enough twinkling stars and rotating rainbows and I think we could get away with a lot.

I've been mulling it too.
Doc' aced the best one. Instant panic, and
in some cases maybe even suicide, if they
don't know how to (or can't) scan all the
pics on their site.

I kinda liked the semi-normal one that prompted him.

I'm thinking we should try and make sites compete for the awards.

heh, time to build a spam email to send out and entrap them.
can we move up to extortion, too? "if you send us $100.00 for processing, we'll shortlist your site for our annual exclusive 'best-of-web' awards!"

Sponsors, prizes?
No real reason that there can't be some
real weight behind it. Makes the troll
less obvious and the hook more tempting.

we can also solicit our real friends for testimonials.
the hundred dollar winners would be our puppets.

Heh, I didn't think of that.
Seems to me there are lots of way to make this work. One is with something like the doc's suggestion above, in which case their return email is what we'd be looking for. Another is to get people to accept surreptitiously insulting or just plain crappy awards and have them post it on their site. And now this idea of having them compete... I guess we'd email them saying they're in the running for a particular award... and maybe we could get them to do stuff? Or how do you see that working?

no reason all approaches couldn't be used.
start them off with awards and then scan through their emails and comments to get the people who like their crud to compete for our awards after they see their friends have received one.

Sounds like...
...we might need something like an
award gif generator to spawn them.
Anti-Hummus only works for
short bursts. Or focus on a key few.

nonsense!
i've been anti-hummusing for years now and still have plenty to offer.

oh, I don't know...
from my point of view making the gifs would be a huge part of the fun, in fact I can hardly wait :) I agree though it might be nice to have some freeware banner generators etc. to use as resources.

For example, we could have an award for using a certain font.
Try and get people to convert their entire page to Century Gothic in order to win.

I'm also thinking we should have two separate blogs -
The one we have, where we can post all of our successes, any hate mail we get etc, and another more official looking blog that we can link people back to so that we look more authentic.

See
I thought exactly that too. That's what I meant yesterday when I said I wasn't sure about the tone... what I was really trying to say was, I didn't know who it should be aimed at, people in on the joke, or the targets potential award recipients.

doc d and i gazzed each other last night.
i have an unused domain that needs some content - not a name that is useful for this project but if it can be of use (even for email or pic hosting), i'll offer it.

Sweet
I'm going to be putting a domain/host together soon solely for storing and serving up my images, because my bandwidth is regularly getting caned and costing me money, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. So, I reckon some image hosting for the gifs might be really useful. Definitely something to bear in mind :)

I have bandwidth to burn, but I don't know the first thing about how to set this up.
I'm sure we can work something out

Yep
I think in a way we have too many ideas, but that's a great problem to have.
Edit: as far as hosting the award gifs, no-one needs ftp access except you. You'll just up them on your server space, and that's about all we'll need.
