basically
it's a thought experiment (not real): you seal a cat in a box with a big source of radiation connected to a big tempting red button marked "do not push" in moggy language. You can't see into the box, so while the box is sealed the cat is, for practical purposes, in a state of being neither living nor dead.
It would be less cruel to do it with a chav.
