The marks are actually crosses are they not, albeit almost unintelligible oneswhich was the standard way in which to display error bars on a graph was it not?

Unless you have error bars in both axis, which he would in this instance.In which case they would be more Nazish. And if you leave the end bars off they would just be crosses.
