and I was only in my socks, more instinct then anything else; my foot seemed to jerk out to catch it. The only thing that was broken was my big toe, or as they refer to it in A&E, 'Great toe'

The big toe is the bitch to break. The smaller (or I'm guessing they'd call lesser) toes get broken regularly, it hurts when it happens but you never suspect they're broken.
That why wimmin that wear high heels all the fire have weird pointing minidigits.
