# But they raped the books so badly
The TV series got so much more of the story in

# There's far too much to fit in a single film, really.
Especially seeing as David Lynch will insist on making extra stuff up as well. I saw the film before I read the book, I was totally expecting it to explain heart plugs at some point.

# And the Wierding modules,
What were they all about O_O

# Although I'll say what I do like about the film
is the visualisation. Everything looks right. The costumes, the sets... there's a good overall feel to it. It's mostly only a shame it runs a bit like the "previous episode" type plot summaries you get at the start of the second part of a two-part miniseries. But for TWO HOURS.

# I do love the film
But the TV series is pretty sweet too - acting could have done with being knocked up a notch though.

Much better than the other series

# Exactly

I like Lynch, generally. But as a Dune buff, I'm trying to forget that little film of his.

I have never seen the film or read any of the books

# *counts in head*
I seem to have 14 Dune books. 6 of which are by Frank Herbert, the others by Brian Herbert. I've read the original ones several times. They're really good, but you have to put some effort into it at first.

# is there any humour in them?

# They are not humourous stories
But there is some, although very sparse. It's not Prachett, if that's what you mean.

Herbert doesn't just make up freaky worlds in which adventures happen. He takes into account social, climatic, cultural, economical, political, religious, ecological factors that are all interdependent.
In the end it's all about power (political, religious, charismatic etc). Who's got it and how did they get it? And who is trying to take it away from them.

/edit: He's actually one of the few science fiction writers that can actually write a book.
