You are masked up I presume?
Some pre 18th C plaster is full of nasties up to and including lead, horsehair, and anthrax spores (I kid you not!)

It is all done, just got to replaster it now. Full of horses hair, the daub was mainly straw. The plaster was probably 300 years old, due to the room we are working in being an extension

But was the original plasterwork beyond repair? Seems a shame to lose such old original fabric.

yep, it was *technical term* dead
We have to use lime plaster as it is listed, the place hasn't been touched for god know how many years
