In the 70's the term coloured was seen as being racist.
The lyrics were controversial at the time.
And seeing as Bendydick Cuminherpatch got slated for using it a while back I thought it still was.

It depends what side of the pond you're talking about
Jim Crow signage always said 'colored' this or that. Growing up in the UK, I heard plenty of racist insults in my time, but I don't remember 'coloured' being involved very often. Coloured people used to say it. My Nan used to say it and she wasn't even that racist (for a Nan)
