Optimizing, other than finding a good automated tool (I use Animation Shop, a discontinued free gif tool from Jasc, now Corel) try doing things like copying all the static area from one frame across all the others to avoid background noise.

Cheers HappyToast....I am beginning to do that with some of the newer gifs I'm making (learned through trial and error in photoshop).
I've never used any other programs before but I'd love to have an automated tool to do the heavy lifting. At the minute I can't really do anything bigger than 30-50 frames lest the gif becomes unintelligible following optimisation.
