You can connect two computers together on a LAN and then do modem sharing, I think it's an integral part of XP. You would just need a network card in each PC and a crossover cable. If you have more than 2 pc's then you would need a hub which are cheap as chips.

Go with a router though, totally recommend it. I've used this and think it's ace.
