Non descrutable editing surface
Ever cut something out and then needed some thing that you have cut out? Well a layer mask you paint stuff you want white, and stuff you don't want black. If you want something back, paint it white. you don't loose any of the information.

Now I am sure that hasn't helped at all has it?
