If I edited the Sun and published a story about Reg down the pub witnessing (fact) Elton John rimming a donkey - it may be hearsay, but it's a libel in that the story is false and causes damage to a person.
As for Bernard, I compared his turkey bugers to a bag of offal. It was a picture caption in computer games magazine - we had to print an apology.
I still stand by it being fair comment.
