till I read a tutorial by a pshop guru. I never looked back after that.
The bonus is that if you come back to edit it later the original is untouched and all the erasering is there to be undone/changed/feathered/opacity changed etc.

If you are using erasers, then make sure you use a feathered edge eraser - that will soften the edges of the bit you cut out and help it to blend into it's new home a bit better.

i use polygon lasso and feather it by 1 pixel usually feather = ctrl + alt + D

I use regular Lasso, and then feather the selection by about 5 or so... Then I erase the left overs up to the parts that I want. I also have a wacom pad/pen, it helps...

then the erasor tool to touch up any bits that were missed - then the sponge tool to desaturate any strange looking colour fringes near the edges.
