what's the best way to go about doing this then?any useful advice. Just count things up on Thursday, put them in excel, graph them, add images and release into the world?

Important bit of advice... DON'T wait until thursday!You'll be there all day. About 80% of entries come in between Friday and Sunday, so do the donkey work of counting on Monday, then most of the hard work is out of the way.
I usually just Plot the graph in Excel, do a screen shot, past into Gimp, and tart it up with added kittens, etc...

Depending of course on the number of entries...If it's one with only a couple of hundred entries, it's a doddle. However, chances are it could be another "Add one word to a movie title"-debacle!
