It doesn't close.
I was 13mm and went back to nothing for my wedding, but I then went up to over 26mm and now they only ever get as small as about 7mm.

It takes about a week to get back up to full size (I wear my big tunnel as a ring - I have fat hands) and then I wear then for a couple of months and then take them out for 9 months or so.
