y'know that mad instrument the polyphonic spree (and athlete) use, which is basically a metal spike that you move your hands about to make weird electronicy noises?

That is all.

Basicly it produces an EM field which through some kind of electronic wizardry produces a different pitch as you pass you hands or knob through it... I believe it's something to to with electrical resistance....
