no little adapterits a bit odd as its got the locating lugs for 3pin

That's exactly it.The fourth pin is for speed control. If your fan doesn't have speed control it will only have three pins.
Stick it on - it'll only fit one way.
EDIT: Ah, just re-read, yours is the other way round - I say go for it, it should be fine.
