# Isn't he mixed race though?
Why is everyone calling him black? Why are they not calling him white? Race is so confusing.

# Don't care
He is the president. Not the Black President.

# because it's historically significant..
and a big deal.
Pretending it's not, and saying it doesn't matter is incredibly naivé.

When a country can go from segregation to this in less than a few dozen years, it shows that the world can change.
By appealing to younger voters, and people of all ethnicities, and by being aware of modern issues and needs, he's won the election. If the USA can sit a black man in the oval office, I'm actually ready to believe that the world is able to move in the right direction.

It doesn't matter the slightest bit if you personally aren't racist, because the general schmuck can be racist enough for the two of you, and I think that it's just about the right time for this to happen.

# only if it's chocolate ;)
I'm sure there's a lot of people who don't agree, and it wasn't much of a surprise to see the deep south swing the other way (oo-er), but I think the whole world knew this was on the air. And regardless of race, I think this change in power, is going to bring about a wind of change that will make everybodies life, just a little bit better. I don't expect the world to turn into utopia, but it's a very good, hopeful turning point.
Throw the race-card back in, and we finally got something right.

Cna't wait to see how history is recorded, if he turns out to be the best damn president ever :p

(as long as the rednecks don't shoot him ;))

# This man speaks the truth.
I feel hopeful for the future for the first time in a long time.

# but he's not black
he's mixed race

that is the point

why is everyone concentrating on the black half and referring to him as if he were 100% black?
(, Wed 5 Nov 2008, 7:56, archived)
# Because that's how blackness works
in the US. *Any* visible African heritage == black, which practically can mean anything down to one black grandparent or even great-grandparent, particularly if there are any other coloured ancestors in the mix.

It's a social construct, not one that makes sense.
