it's a collective of independent news sources who tend to concentrate on more 'subversive' political issues - anti-G8, climate change camps, indigenous rights, etc.
Basically, covering the news that large Murdochian organs won't cover. Some groups can be a bit fluffy, others are really well organised.
Having said all that, I haven't checked them out for a couple of years so this might be completely out of date info....
