The Moon at the same distance as the ISS
Not sure about the realism of the black sky, but it's pretty good all the same.

Am I the only person who finds XKCD tries too hard?
I have no love for it.

A few people don't like it, because it's pretentious/smug.
Personally I like it, but I think I am also both of those things.

I'm not sure you could accuse it of either
Pretty sure that if you're seeing pretentiousness or smugness there, then you brought that to the party all on your own.

I am not sure if I think it is pretentious
I think it is great that people are getting exposed to some interesting concepts - but it seems like the kind of output you would create if you were tasked with trying to amuse smart people with your amazing wikipedia mining skills every other weekday.

The one thing I ever liked was the use of alt text on every comic.

It's at least worth the time it takes to read. [NSFW]
but the GoatKCD parody site (which is identical to xkcd except for the final panel being replaced by a line drawing of goatse) is often funner than the original.
For example. Start at today's (which doesn't really work), and work backwards. I think you'll agree it has a surprising hit-ratio.

It's "ha, I understand that joke/scientific reference" humour
rather than actual jokes.

I watched a film a while ago, which was so good I've
forgotten the name, but in this film an asteroid hits the moon and makes it go closer to earth (eventually it smooshes against it, I think) but I can assure you this would be bad as everybody briefly floated every time it went over.

A truly international 'Mexican Wave'. We could all drink Coca Cola and sing as it happens.

this would be more entertaining to watch
if it showed what it would actually look like, ie massive earthquakes and mountains flying about and shit

I do it often when i'm to bored to think of anything to write
Ninjas can kill anyone they want! Ninjas cut off heads ALL the time and don't even think twice about it. These guys are so crazy and awesome that they flip out ALL the time. I heard that there was this ninja who was eating at a diner. And when some dude dropped a spoon the ninja killed the whole town. My friend Mark said that he saw a ninja totally uppercut some kid just because the kid opened a window
