I don't really think that is the biggest problem.
An extinction level event from runaway global warming, yellowstone erupting or a dinosaur sized asteroid collision seem more likely than total extinction through war.

And some are more resourceful and adaptable than the Passenger Pigeon.

You can design a virus that could kill millions but still it isn't likely to kill each and every person it infects.
And over time natural selection may favour strains that are less virulent. Artificial Insemination on the other hand will kill us all.
