The Black Hole is caused by Nolans' giant Ego at the centre of the film.

Well given that I've been playing around with Space Engine
I refuse to believe that nobody knew what a black hole looks like until this film. That's patently nonsense. They may have simulated it in greater detail and written some fancy renderers but come on.
