In case you heard the rumblings from the LHC last week, and the subsequent rush to explain what on Earth it means, we thought we would put together a little video to explain what a Higgs Boson really is...

...a very nicely done explanation - good analogy with the clapping.

My tiny mind just can't handle the numbers and apparently counter intuitive logic involving quantum physics.
So the higgs particle is made up of other particles that have no mass but has a mass of 125keV and creates a field that gives mass to some particles but not to all particles.
Good effort in trying to explain it but my brain just rejects that.

The Higgs boson doesn't create the Higgs field. The field has been there all along. The field is not created by any particle. The Higgs boson interacts with the Higgs field, so if we can find the boson then we can infer the existance of the field. Other particles also interact with the field. It is the field which confers mass on particles, not the boson as so many mainstream media outlets keep repeating.

I love science but only have a very basic knowledge of it and this explains things in a way I wouldn't have understood in technical terms.

I think I actually learnt something then.
I wish you'd been my teacher at school etc.

And the animation is superb! I like happy particles.
