When I was about 8 a classmate barfed up his lunchtime salad all over his desk, including, I was interested to note, many lumps of beetroot.Dunno why but that beetroot stayed with me and I can't bear it to this day. It frightens me in the same way that spiders or confined spaces frighten arachnophobes and claustrophobes.
