Cheap TatOneEyedMonster remindes us about the crap you can buy in pound shops: "Batteries that lasted about an hour and then died. A screwdriver with a loose handle so I couldn't turn the damn screw, and a tape measure which wasn't at all accurate."
Similarly, my neighbour bought a lawnmower from Argos that was so cheap the wheels didn't go round, it sort of skidded over the grass whilst gently back-combing it.

Ca$h Converter --> eBay exchange rate gloryMy housemate and I at University would often spend our Wednesday afternoons scouring the shelves of the Ca$h Converter in Manchester. Most of the stuff was fairly pricey for second hand* rubbish. Sports gear, games consoles and the like.
The great thing was that the PFYs who valued the stuff had one communal braincell between them, so if someone brought in something out of the ordinary it either got stupidly overvalued or went for between 50p and a fiver.
Cue two fairly savvy Electronics students finding things like BetaMax machines for £3, a 'broken' camcorder for 50p (easily repaired with a dab of solder) and other such gems.
Being sad tecchies we kept a few, but most went on eBay - esp. the BetaMax machines - where they were snapped up by people who had broken theirs and could no longer watch their wedding video / birthday / 'home' movies etc.
We also used to have a look in skips as we passed if there was office refurbishments going on. Got a few funny looks as the two of us unloaded a 50 way telephone exchange complete with phones from the back of a mates car one Sunday ... but it paid for a damn fine pishup for us all!
Length? Not as long as the 100m drum of 20core cable that became a stagebox for our mate's band!
