DIY disasters
I just can't do power tools. They always fly out of control and end up embedded somewhere they shouldn't. I've no idea how I've still got all the appendages I was born with.
Add to that the fact that nothing ends up square, able to support weight or free of sticking-out sharp bits and you can see why I try to avoid DIY.

There will be a tiny hole under the old disc tray
that you can poke with a straightened paper clip to release the old disc without having to wire in the drive again.

actually came with a special pokey thing for just that purpose, like a pre-bent paperclip only sturdier. One of my prized tools it is now

Paperclips are too fiddly for me
Just plug the drive into a spare power connector from the computer's PSU, and switch it on. The eject button should work then. You don't normally need to connect the IDE cable.
