Why? Surely you'd both be better off just saying something and calling it quits. I've admitted defeat, albeit reluctantly, and although one might expect to immediately be shifted into the 'lets just be friends' category this isn't always the case. Granted I did put in a sterling effort at carpet munching which in turn resulted in another crack at her crack at a later date. There are lessons to be learned here me thinks.

but there have been times (usually when you hit that point between being too drunk to feel anything and being too drunk to perform at all) where I could go all night and still get nowhere. I agree that learning to breath through ones' ears is always a good fall-back position (girls always forgive a guy who is happy to snarl at the busby), but sometimes you have the terrible times when you really try your best to get things to a satifactory finish and all you end up with is a girl who is bored/chafed and an old fella who glows in the dark from all the friction...Still, it's got to be better than spraying her with man-goo before you get going. Much better to have to apologise for lasting too long than for getting over-excited at the first hurdle and failing to go the distance, I think!

Personally
I'd have a lot more respect if a bloke just told me straight that he wasn't able to finish the job, than if he attempted to fool me. Women understand (or at least I do) that it's not always as simple as "you don't fancy me".
