This is a question Family codes and rituals

Freddy Woo writes, "as a child we used to have a 'whoever cuts doesn't choose the slice' rule with cake. It worked brilliantly, but it's left me completely anal about dividing up food - my wife just takes the piss as I ritually compare all the slice sizes."

What codes and rituals does your family have?

Mrs Humpty...
... HAS to check the door is locked twice before she leaves. If I try to stop her she'll yammer and whine all the way out of the building - like a puppy that needs a pee.

She's even been known to exit the lift on the ground floor and run back up the stairs to check before I can block the path.. It's kind of cute.... but a little worrying too.

:o/ Her Dad however.. He checks 6 times. I suppose Old age is going to bring some little foibles with it..

Tell her she's in good company
I check the hobs and oven (even if they've not been used), the heating (again, even if it's not been on), the television, check the front door's locked, then check the door to the house is locked. If I miss one, I have to go back in and start again. This has made me late for work, interviews, everything.

Agreed
I do exactly the same. Doors, hobs, heating, irons, the usual. I once made an excuse to go home from to check the hob.

We were also burgled last week so I'm doubly alert to the possibility of unlockage, despite the fact the door WAS locked and they used crowbars.

The Cnuts.

Don't tend to do it unless I'm tired or stressed tho.

My girlfriend
is the same. But with hair straigteners. Once we were half way across London and had to go back home to 'make sure' she'd turned the bloody things off. Anyone would think they were made of semtex and napalm.
